Life is a Highway -Cars Soundtrack version
So this might be a weird one but stick with me and I’ll explain why this is my most listened to song lately.
It all started a little over 3 years ago when my wife said “let’s have a kid!” That mug be going a little too far back with a little too much personal detail…lol! Anyway, I have a 3 year old son who, like most kids, gets absolutely obsessed about one thing for a while. Over the last few months it’s been Cars, specifically the soundtrack to it. Literally any time my wife or I put any song on or drive anywhere with him he demands “Cars Song!” To be played. To be totally honest, this totally pissed me off at first. There’s nothing like pulling up your favorite playlist just to be overruled by a toddler. I finally started to come around to it when I realized that this little thing brought such joy to my son. The look on his face, how it lights up, when it comes on is worth all of the annoyance of not getting to listen to the song I wanted to. I guess this is a great lesson to learn in life, sometimes bringing joy to someone else(even at your own expense) can be so rewarding!

I have u/OnionMiasma to thanks for this beautiful razor from the PIF he ran and sent razors to all three who entered. He went way above and beyond by not only buying a razor just for me, but buying a replacement from eBay after the first was unusable due to a broken blade guide. He also sent me a blade in a separate package complete with a wonderful Christmas card! I about died laughing when I saw the card but TBH its a brilliant way to send a blade!
I’ve been kicking myself after passing up a beautiful one early in my wetshaving career and finally got too try this out.
This was my first ever use of a MMOC and boy does it earn the reputation it has! I’m super happy that I’ve gotten to use some more aggressive razors lately and didn’t jump into this blind. This is definitely going to be a challenge to use every day for a month!

I was on the fence about using Sea Spice Lime again this year after throughly enjoying every second of it last AA but this pushed me over to HoM Sonder. I have been blessed in too many ways to count so to help support the great causes that Ben helps support in RestoreNYC and Love146 was too good to pass up. I did have to source a HoM balm but thankfully Maggards helped me out there with their WWTBDWSSITW sale. I went back and forth about using the Alive soap too but decided to keep the Sonder Soap and EdP together.

The second #Sidetracked song for the month is the one that always brings me back to my Elementary & Middle school days. Back when getting in the car meant spending 15 mins combing through one of these before hitting the road. It was the sacred duty of whoever has shotgun to provide the correct tunes for the ride and totally justifiable reason to kick someone to the back row if they didn’t perform!
Every time I hear this song I am transported to times of sitting in the carport of our old house doing whatever stupid shit my siblings and friends could think up. It was a simpler time and TBH I miss it a little bit.
Good shave today! This razor is definitely not the one to chase BBS with but I got a closer shave than I expected given only doing two passes and not going ATG.

Something - The Beatles
Todays song was picked by going into my phones library and hitting shuffle. To understand the significance of this I need to provide some background.
When I was a teenager I had a mentor who I call my “Second Dad.” He was one of those guys who was super invested in your life and made you into a better version of yourself. There were many weeks where I spent more time with him than my own family. I 100% believe that he is the reason that I am in the position that I am today because of him.
Background covered: Andy was one of those guys with a photographic memory and could literally remember anything. He also loved all music and had the road-trip setup that was the envy of everyone. Andy had one of those iPod Classics with 180GB of storage absolutely full of songs. I don’t exactly remember how many songs it was but it was more than 25,000 at one point! Andy could tell you every song on there, the album it was from and when it was released. This made road-trips an adventure every time!
Todays shave was the best it’s been so far in this short period with the MMOC. Not sure if the initial hardness of the blade has subsided or if I’m getting better with finding the right angle with it.

Ants Marching - Dave Mathews Band
Another band that I fell in love with thanks to my “Second Father” Andy. He always went to the concerts whenever they performed anywhere near him. I attempted to join him once when I was in college but Mother Nature stopped that from happening.
I had just started dating the woman who would eventually become my wife and for my Birthday she got us tickets to go see DMB with Andy! I was so excited, not only for the concert but to get to go with Andy. It was a beautiful summer evening at the amphitheater with the warm up bands getting the night going well when a huge storm rolled up on us! We stuck it out as long as we could but they forced us to evacuate when the lightning started. That led to waiting in the car, soaked, only for them to cancel the show due to a power outage. Best thing about it was Ticketmaster refused to refund our money due to “you attended the show” calling the warm up bands enough of a show to warrant the price.

Fire - Mother’s Finest
Seeing as I have been sharing songs that remind me of my “Second Father” I figured that I should share one for my actual Father!
To say that my parents are straight-laced and on the uptight side would be putting things mildly. Both had struggles while growing up in large families but especially my Dad. His father walked out on my Grandma and her 4 sons when my Dad (the oldest) was a teenager and was remarried very soon after to the woman he was cheating with. Dad instantly became the “Man” of the house and never got to ever let loose. He ended up becoming a Methodist Pastor and has lived a life on the straight and narrow.
But every so often, on a Saturday dedicated to cleaning the house. He would pull out the old giant speakers just like these and absolutely turn it up to 11! His soundtrack of choice was ALWAYS Mother’s Finest! I like to think that he only chose their songs because my Mom absolutely hates their music for whatever reason. As a kid I enjoyed rocking out to their song as it made cleaning the house that much more fun!
I am really enjoying this setup for AA! Sonder and Alive complement each other better than I was expecting! I think that its the basil in the Alive balm that really grounds the entire scent!
I have been continuously surprised with how smooth of a shave I am getting from the MMOC. It is not exactly comfortable to shave with and I am shying away from going for a BBS shave but it ends up being a lot closer then I thought. I’m hoping that this blade gets me through the entire month without any issue. I was successful last year at getting a blade to last the whole month but the MMOC is a whole different beast!

I haven’t really reported a lot about my shaves so far so here it is: House of Mammoth is good. MMOC is ok.
Joking aside, I am super happy with my choice for software. Sonder is incredible as I already knew but the HoM aftershave balm is incredible! I am not a fan of alcohol splashes so I’m super happy that they offer a balm to complement their soaps.
The MMOC has surpassed my expectations on how close of a shave i can get with it, even with only two passes! It is taking some getting use to and I’m figuring out that a slightly steeper angle helps out but it’s still far from a smooth feeling while shaving. This razor demands respect and it’s getting it from me! I haven’t cut myself (yet) but have gotten some irritation from not having the right angle.

This song solidly lands in the “Let’s get this shit started” phase of my workout playlist. It has a great beat and there’s no denying the lyrics are absolutely perfect to start a run with. I mean come on!

How much more motivating can you get? For that reason it is the first song in my playlist for my yearly (or twice a year depending on how well I do) PT test. It never fails to set the mood for me!
I’m starting to figure out this razor a little more thankfully. Using a little steeper angle helps it not have quite as rough of a feeling while shaving. It’s still giving really close shaves which I guess is the goal, but I’m working to make it feel a little smoother during the process.

Today is the first day that I’ve wanted to use another soap. Not that I didn’t want to use Sonder, I just really would’ve loved to use something with menthol in it today. I went in a nice long walk with the family this morning, then finished up my honey-do list of projects this afternoon. Chicken Fried - Zac Brown Band
Despite growing up in the Southern US my taste in music was simply “ABC” (Anything But Country) but this is one of the songs that opened my eyes to that genre. For the longest time growing up I thought Country music was nothing but songs about losing your dog or girlfriend. It doesn’t help that all I listened to was either Christian (my Mom) or NPR talk shows (my Dad) and then I was driven to the opposite of what they had in Hard Rock and Punk Rock. I distinctly remember hearing this song for the first time on Youth Retreat and my Youth Pastor trying to “censor” the cold beer into cold tea and instantly becoming a fan of the song. The funny thing about that is she drank like a fish and didn’t really hide it any other time. She just couldn’t condone drinking with her group of Middle Schoolers.

This is my last day of Paternity Leave and while I was happy to get 6 weeks off with our newborn I am looking forward to getting back to work. It will be very nice to get all of us back into our normal routine which my family thrives on. I probably will regret saying that next Monday when facing a full week of work but for now I’m looking forward to it.

Almost to the last third grind of AA! This blade has mellowed out a ton and I’m getting much smoother shaves now. I hope this isn’t a short peak with a rapid decline, last year the last 5-6 shaves were quite the struggle but it’s a whole different setup this year!

I think my weekend was more exhausting than the week and that’s saying something! Short week at work with next Friday off but I don’t get a break next weekend either. I’m helping my Mom clean out my late Grandmothers house and that will be quite the ordeal. She was quite the hoarder of things that “might be useful one day” but really never would. Still will be good to spend time with my Mom since I live almost 500 miles away from her.

Aug 31, 2022 - Getting Sidetracked while searching for the Wisdom of a Mammoth

Last shave of the month and I went out on a low note. I shaved at the end of today after a super long, exhausting day I rushed the shave and it wasn’t as nice as some of the others this month.
After a full month of use I have used a grand total of 1.8 oz of soap. At this rate a full tub of 4 oz would last me 68.888 uses which nicely rounds up to 69 uses! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I have been thoroughly impressed with the Mammoth balm that I bought for AA. It has a ton of uses in it as a months use is only barely below the top of the label.
Thanks to u/djundjila and his djudge-bots I can already tell that 20/29 people have already completed a Mammoth shave every day this month. Such a great turnout for such a great cause! As promised at the beginning of the month, I’ve made a donation to the both of the causes that HoM supports with every purchase.
