    Aug. 1, 2022 - Austere August Ultra Nightmare RawHoggin Stagpocalypse

    It’s officially fucking August now, bitches and that means it’s time to bust out my second favorite scent, not only in the wet shaving world but PERIOD. Sorry fellow followers of The One True Stag, but Valley still takes number one. Anyway, since I sprayed roughly 45ml of the EdP last year, I absolutely had to up the ante this year, so I got everyfuckingthing that has the Stag and this shall I subside.

    The Silk soap base is a LOT softer than the original base and I can see how it’ll disappear a lot faster, especially during the break in process of this new Semogue brush. Keeping in mind the brush didn’t want to cooperate today, it still finally whipped into a nice and creamy lather that performed well. I’ve never had much of an issue with the MMOC and I love SE razors, so that’s not very challenging.

    Post shave was neat because I got to follow up the aftershave with the beard oil on my beard, then aftershave balm on my face, then finally the beard balm. Finishing off with 7 sprays of Stag EdP just because makes me feel like a walking fucking Stag bomb! This will surely be an interesting month and I have no doubt in my mind that I will be tasting Stag in my mask all day.

    Aug. 2, 2022 - Austere August Ultra Nightmare RawHoggin Stagpocalypse

    As sacrilegious as it sounds to day this, it was bit harder to make myself do the full bit today. Hell, I didn’t want to get out of bed this morning. Yesterday completely kicked my ass. I’m still trying to oversee the care of my grandmother who fell and broke her femur Sunday morning and has been in the hospital about an hour away since then. No idea when surgery will be because no one communicates worth a damn. Add in a delightfully hellish day in clinic yesterday and a Jim that is still trying to fully recover from Covid and you’ve got the recipe for pure exhaustion. But Stag waits for no man and the scent when I walked into the bathroom this morning helped to peek me right up and I was able to rally and get ‘er done.

    I couldn’t tell a substantial difference in the brush from yesterday and it still felt like I overloaded when in fact I needed to go back to the tub for more soap before I was satisfied with my lather. But oh boy it was such sumptuous lather when I got it dialed in to my preference! The shave itself was dreamily easy with the MMOC and the rest of my routine went swimmingly. I’m really enjoying the beard balm in a stick form, which is something I’ve never experienced before but something about this routine has my beard looking more well-kept than it truly is. And 15 sprays hit just right today.

    Quick update before I begin. My grandmother was successfully surgerized yesterday and will be discharged from the hospital either tomorrow or Friday. Hopefully Friday because she wants me to be the person to take her to the nursing home for rehab, so fingers crossed there. As for work, doc and I are both just exhausted and, after talking to him yesterday, I decided to ask administration for a raise next week or so since my work load isn’t ever gonna decrease. We’ll see how that goes.

    The shave today was the best so far. The more broken in the brush has gotten, the easier it is to load enough soap and the easier it is to lather. Today was the first day I didn’t need to reload, so that was nice. The shave went swimmingly and I think I’ll need to choose a different razor next year. This just isn’t a challenge any more. It’s a great razor but this is boringly easy. Post shave was nice with the bite of the aftershave, soothing properties of the balm, and the beard oil and balm tame my mane enough to maintain some semblance of respectability. I decided in the shower that I’ll be using audience participation of a sort to decide my sprays from now on. Right before I apply EdP, I’ll check my previous day’s shave and spray the amount of upvotes I received. Seems fair, no? So without further ado, here’s 19 sprays.

    What a fucking day. I shaved this mornin but am just now posting. I’ll spray some random number tomorrow. 16 or some shit. I dunno. Grandmother is safely in the nursing home for rehab and work was the worst it’s been in a couple of years. I know I was just off for Covid but I need a vacation. So close to just hanging it up and learning how to drive a truck or somethin. They make WAY more than I do anyway.

    Another nice shave today. The brush continually gets better and I’m getting faster each day at dialing in the soap correctly. Quick plush and a tub of balm followed by a bit of beard care sealed the deal. Yesterday wasn’t a big upvote day for me, so only 11 sprays today.

    Edit: it was brought to my attention that I failed to showcase my brush and I’d like to remedy that here.

    No complaining today. Only the shave, which I think went pretty ok. I got in a bit of a hurry since today’s my daughter’s first day of school and I have a bit of irritation under my jawline to show for it. But a nice slather of that balm after the aftershave really did a world of good. The big difference today was the addition of the Nostalgic Stag pomade. I have zero experience with oil-based pomades so I went super light and am just gonna see how it goes today. Wrapped it all up with 12 sprays today. I posted really late so I just doubled those upvotes and called it good.

    Another good shave. I changed my mind about flipping the blade in the MMOC and haven’t even opened it up since the start of the month. Might as well just push through and see what happens. I honestly don’t see where it would make a huge difference so there’s no point. Just 4 sprays for today.

    Super quick shave today. Had to get ready early and head to my second job before I usually do because we’re heading to St. Louis to watch a Cardinals game. The shave was good but I super rushed to pack it all up and bring it with me. In retrospect, I pray I didn’t forget anyway. 10 sprays today and I kinda already regret it. Not for my own sake but for my patient and his friend that are in this van with me the next several hours. Oops…

    Nice and easy shave today. I’ve been good and awake since before 6 and my patient didn’t want to get out of bed until after 10, so I just took my sweet ass time and shaved smooth and slow. Only 1 spray today because I didn’t want to choke him out again but the video is unusable due to him talking and the possibility of a HIPAA violation. I can always add a spray or ten later if need be but I think I’ll give myself a pass for today. We literally just left Busch Stadium and I finally have a chance to post this because he’s been a bit needy today. I learned something though: suite seats are amazing and there’s nothing like it in the entire world. Period.

    It was nice to shave at home again today. It WAS NOT, however, nice to unpack all of the things I brought with us this mornin. Dear God, does it really take all of that, Jim? Short answer: yes. It’s the month of Stag. This is the month that a random population of weirdos that obsess over shaving and everyone they come into contact with become mesmerized by one of the best scents ever. Disagree? Well, you can be wrong. It’s ok. No one’s perfect. Just like I only sprayed 4 sprays today because the upvotes just weren’t there. And that’s ok. This time.

    Today felt like cheating again. Seriously. This brush is consistently getting easier to use every day and was only really challenging the first few days and it seems I’ve hit the point that I have less work for a good lather every day. The only remotely hard thing to figure out has been the pomade. I’ve had to change the hair style a bit because it weighs my hair down too much. Hell, I barely used any at all today and have washed my hair twice since the last application yesterday morning and I went super light on it. I also went relatively light on the EdP today with only 14 sprays.

    Nothing worth mentioning aside from the fact that I really wish this would’ve been a clay pomade instead of oil based because I’m only using minimal amounts and it won’t wash out and is slowly making my hair look greasy AF. Maybe I need to look up a tutorial or something this afternoon. Oh well. In the meantime, I doused myself with 9 sprays today to help me forget how wild my hair looks.

    Starting to feel a bit of tugging when I neglect to pay attention to the angle of the razor head, but nothing too bad as of yet. The brush is continuing to open up nicely as the shaves continue. I’m not actively doing anything extra before or after I shave, but I’m also not being gentle with it during the shave. It’s been a neat process to take part in and not skip around on. Got hit with a respectable 15 sprays today and I’m ready to get this day over with.

    Almost hit the halfway point and, as much as I love Stag, I’m starting to miss the variety. THIS is the hardest part of the challenge each year. I love the scent, I always enjoy the MMOC, I don’t mind using the same blade or anything, it’s simply the monotony of using the same scents day in and day out. Still better than those weirdos doing the unscented challenge. Blech. 9 sprays today.

    Something really interesting has happened this morning. I’ve noticed this month that my aftershave doesn’t smell quite like the rest of the Stag I have, but couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I think I’ve decided what it smells like at this point though. As I dump some of the magic Stag juice on my hands, my nostrils immediately feel inundated by the scent of whiskey! No smoke, oil, gasoline but only whiskey. It’s not bad by any means, but it’s interesting and shows how products can evolve over time. 6 sprays this morning since that’s all the upvotes that came through yesterday.

    Late post but great shave today. I was running late and just slowed down enough to post even though I’m still at work. I wanted to focus on my brush and decided to try using it without my normal 2 minutes or so of soaking since I was in such a rush. Honestly, I couldn’t tell a difference. This is already the softest boar I’ve ever gotten my hands on and the more I use it this month, the better it’s gotten. Just the right amount of backbone and damn near no scritch which is the only thing I’d change if given a chance. I do like a bit of scritchiness in my boars but this one is great even without it. It’s already splaying out nice and evenly and whips up a great lather without having to beat it into submission like I did the first week. 16 sprays I think today. I can’t watch my own videos and recount but I’m sure it was 16. I think.

    I wasn’t in as big of a hurry today so I was able to really enjoy the entire process from start to finish. 20 sprays today since I posted late again. I’d call it a self-imposed penance, but I enjoy this olfactive flagellation.

    It’s been a helluva day. I didn’t go to bed until after 5 this morning because I was babying the grill outside all night. My wife took an order to cater for a class reunion and I felt obligated to assist. So I smoked 4 Boston butts, marinated and grilled about 15 pounds of chicken breasts, and prepared various other dishes to finish today. Woke up around 9:30, visited my grandmother who’s in the hospital right now, and got back to work. We finished all the food and got it delivered and set up, ate supper ourselves, and was just about to go to bed when I realized I didn’t shave this morning. I’ll be damned if I miss a single day, so I HAD to shave! I only sprayed one spray tonight and didn’t film it because I’m only wearing my boxers and nobody wants to see that.

    Today was all about learning my limits. I learned that I can’t stay up for the better part of 24 hours, bust my ass cooking a bunch of shit, take a small nap, finish all of the things while staying up all day, then proceed to drink a couple of beers and eat a whole delta 8/10 gummy and expect to function AT ALL the next day. I’ve done nothing today. Nothing. Literally just showered and shaved for the first time a few minutes ago. I once again only sprayed one spray but that because the lingering not-quite-hangover refused to smell anything more. Mid 30’s ain’t no damn joke.

    Woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed today, so I took my sweet time shaving and the way my skin feels is proof. This Semogue is opening up beautifully and sure doesn’t feel like something I’ve used 22 times ever. The MMOC is still cutting with only minimal tug. I think I’ll probably give in and flip the blade tomorrow. I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned the balm yet but this shit is wonderful. One pump and it spreads nice and smoothly all over my face, eliminating any tightness or dry skin. Still using the tiniest amount of pomade because I don’t want to look completely greasy. And 20 sprays today since I once again posted late as fuck.

    With a bit over a week left, I’ve begun to ruminate over just what AA means. It began with the basic ideal of not buying more but using what you’ve already got and it slowly morphed into a themed month that the users decide for themselves. I don’t think that change is a bad thing. In fact, I believe that it’s allowed for more self expression and, in those of us with good taste and sense, a month to develop a closer relationship with the Stag. 25 sprays of the good good today.

    Come hell or high water, I’m gonna figure this damn pomade out before I give up. One day my hair looks ok, the next it’s a damn mess by the time I get to work. Everything else went swimmingly though. Even though the Silk base from CF does disappear faster than the regular base, everything about it is just objectively better imo. Loads better, lathers better, is slicker, and gives a better post shave feel. The last metric is honestly the least important to me because I do add a couple of post shave products on top. Still worth it. And thanks to the upvotes from yesterday, doubled it up to 8 sprays to finish today.

    An interesting thing happened today. As I was rinsing out the Stag tub, I realized that I could already see the beginning of the end in the middle of the tub. Perhaps if I’d have used a synthetic and not had such a heavy hand, it would’ve lasted longer. Hell, I suppose I’ll keep using this even after the month is over until I get another kill on my belt. It’s still been such a great soap that I don’t want to dissuade anyone on the fence about trying it. Just don’t use it to break in a brand new boar brush and you should be fine. Everything else went off without a hitch. I went with 25 sprays for shits and giggles, but this is not what I was referring to u/Enndeegee. That’s tomorrow.

    So today was an experience that I don’t recommend anyone to try. I listened to peer pressure and did the unthinkable: took a shot and then dumped the rest on my head. What’s not pictured is me taking a shot of whiskey to kill the taste in my mouth and then gagging and retching over the toilet. Spoilers: nothing killed the fasted and it feels like it’s coated the back of my palate. One positive part of this failed experience is that both my both and my breath smell really good. Another is that I’m beginning to feel more energized this morning. More powerful. More focused. Either the elixir contains some secret power or I’m already a wee bit drunk. Either way, interesting start to a Sunday!

    The finish line is in sight! Two more shaves and it’ll be another AA in the books. Today’s shave went as well as basically all the others. Think I’m gonna go Headless Horsemen next year because the MMOC isn’t a challenge to me. I haven’t opened the razor or touched the blade except for during the shave and I’m still getting great shaves every time. Hell, I even figured out how to shave my neck without any redness or irritation afterwards! The only difference today was the newest bottle of the Stag EdP is A LOT darker than any of my previous bottles. Smells smokier to me, but I wonder if that’s my mind playing tricks on me. Either way, everything has gone smoothly and I’m pleased. Oh, and only 6 sprays today.

    Another smooth and easy shave today. The hole is getting bigger by the day and that’s always exciting as hell. Also finally figuring out the pomade. I might be cheating and mixing it with a bit of a matte clay pomade I use and am able to get the hold I want without looking like I haven’t showered in a week. Topped it off with around 12 sprays today.

    This is it. We did it again. This has been the toughest AA for me outside of shaving itself, so it was really nice to have the ritual and stability to help keep me a bit centered. I may have made sure I finished off a few things with this last shave: the liquid soap, bath soap, and beard oil are all officially empty. If I decide to do this again next year, I’ll need to start with brand new stuff. I debated on using an obscene amount of EdP today, but I’m driving my mom and grandmother to a follow up ortho visit 45 minutes away this morning and didn’t want to choke them out. I mean, 12 sprays seemed like a good way to finish strong anyway. After the trials and tribulations (and terrible decisions on my part), it’s been a great month and I’m glad I participated again. There is no one around us untouched by the Stag and that is as it should be.
